The Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is seeking a motivated individual to work as a public information officer (PIO) located in downtown Sacramento headquarters office. Under the general oversight of the PIO II in the Office of Education Communication and Outreach. As a CDFW PIO you'll have the opportunity to help showcase the department's dedication to preserving wildlife, habitats and climate for future generations through interviews, writing, photos and video. This position is as diverse as the subjects you'll help cover from Chinook salmon, mountain lions, bighorn sheep to native plants, waterfowl and marine life, there is endless opportunity to tell their stories sharing with media, stakeholders and the public. This person will need to be able to develop a media plan, write a press release, capture photos and video for social media and promote through traditional media and newer social media platforms. You'll have a chance to work with scientists, wildlife officers and others that find passion in their careers and are eager to share their knowledge. This position is eligible for hybrid telework, dependent on operational need, and will be required to report to the assigned office at least twice per week. The position requires the use of a computer for several hours each day, the completion of office tasks that require sitting, standing, and walking to other locations; attendance at meetings and participation in conference calls. Office and field work may require a uniform. Moderate travel is required within the state of California via private or public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.) and may include multiple day overnight stay up to three (3) days, dependent on operational need.
The position will require occasional travel and include driving state or personal vehicle. A valid California driver license is required. Ability to use keyboard most of the workday. Involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods. Attend meetings and training sessions, work with staff throughout the department to complete work assignments. May be required to wear a CDFW uniform for public events and/or media interviews. The position will need to travel for 20 percent of the job, which will include remote locations.

Demonstrated the ability to act independently and think creatively about complex communication topics. Proven ability to articulate complex information in a clear, concise manner for diverse audiences. Extensive background in building and maintaining positive relationships with media outlets. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
